Cohosting With A Panhellenic Sorority

Short Description

In 2000, the National Panhellenic Conference recommended to its 26 member groups that they implement a resolution in support of substance-free housing for fraternities. Out of that recommendation, there are 2 different policies that were developed. 22 of the 26 groups have adopted one of the two policies. They are referred to as the Alcohol-Free Social Activities and Alcohol-Free Facility policies.

Introduction

Why do I need to care about these policies?
Many Phi Tau chapters have felt the effects of this policy and it has affected their programming because they were not aware of the restrictions these policies place on the sororities. Therefore, given that Phi Tau has not adopted any national legislation regarding alcohol-free housing, and if you are on a campus that has NPC Sororities you will be affected. In addition, a function refers to any gathering including exchanges, philanthropy events and social functions.

The Alcohol-Free Social Activities Policy

The policy states that the NPC member fraternities will continue to support the efforts toward alcohol-free housing in men's facilities and that the individual NPC member fraternities will co-sponsor only alcohol-free functions in men's fraternity facilities by the fall term of 2000.

The Alcohol-Free Facility Policy

The policy states that the NPC member fraternities will continue to support the efforts toward alcohol-free housing in men's facilities and that the individual NPC member fraternities will co-sponsor only alcohol-free functions in men's fraternity facilities that are alcohol-free by the fall term of 2000.

Campus Policies

Many campus Panhellenic’s have adopted one of the two previous listed policies. As mentioned earlier there are 4 NPC sororities that have NOT adopted one of the two previous listed policies. Those chapters are: Alpha Sigma Tau, Sigma Kappa, Phi Sigma Sigma, Sigma Delta Tau. However, they may fall under a Panhellenic policy if you are at one of the following campuses:
