Introduction to the Recruitment Chairman

The Recruitment Chair is responsible for working with the Board of Governors (BOG) Recruitment Advisor, Recruitment Committee, and the entire chapter. The primary expectation for the Recruitment Chair is to develop, plan/coordinate, and implement/execute the recruitment plan and strategy. The following are the basic expectations of the Recruitment Chair:

Job Description and Major Responsibilities

  • Understand the Ritual, Creed, and Oath. As Recruitment Chairman you must understand the Ritual of Phi Kappa Tau in order to recruit men that posses and share the same values of Phi Kappa Tau. We are not a reform school and therefore should be providing an atmosphere for the campus’s best to continue to develop and reach their potential.
  • Form a Recruitment Committee/Team. It doesn’t matter how big or small the chapter. If you don’t do anything right for an entire semester the chapter must have a successful recruitment program. Therefore, recruitment is everyone’s responsibility. Also, the chapter needs to recognize and understand that in order to be successful there is no way that one person can plan, organize, and implement a recruitment plan and do all of the recruiting.
  • Meet and chair the Recruitment Committee/Team meetings a minimum of once per week.
  • Meet with the BOG Recruitment Advisor. You should be in contact with the Recruitment advisor a minimum of once per month via email, phone, or preferably in person. As Recruitment Chairman you should meet in person with the Recruitment Advisor prior to implementing any large recruitment effort.
  • Be familiar with National risk-management-policies regarding “Dry” recruitment.
  • Be familiar with the local [[IFC]]]’s policies and procedures regarding recruitment. Retain a copy of the newest copy of the local IFC’s recruitment rules and regulations. If you are unsure if you have the most recent copy, consult with the Greek Advisor or IFC Recruitment officer.
  • Conduct a recruitment retreat. The retreat should address the chapter’s recruitment strategy/plan, inform the chapter of all event dates and individual responsibilities, and instruct new members on how to effectively recruit. You are expected to make sure the chapter is “recruiting” and not “rushing”.
  • Communicate with chapter and area alumni in order to get recommendations and to assure their support. Alumni are good guest speakers and reinforce the life long commitment that potential members will make if they choose to join. Having good alumni participation at recruitment events is impressive, especially if the other chapters do not have good alumni attendance.
  • Maintain a list of prospective members to be read at chapter meetings.
  • Assure a high level of visibility on campus and in the community.
  • Model the way – Lead by example.
  • Manage all recruitment publications and promotional materials.
  • Create a budget.
  • Develop a recruitment calendar.

Best Practicies

  • Conduct monthly brainstorming meetings to challenge the current recruitment methods, strategies, techniques, themes, etc.
  • Establish a first year mentoring program. This program will allow you to serve the campus community and recruit. Either way you cannot go wrong
  • Educate yourself on your Chapter Educational Grant Fund with the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation – This will allow you to recruit through a scholarship program.
  • Do presentations for the faculty, sororities, and other student organizations when looking for recommendations.
  • Offer some type of campus wide programming – This event could be educational, social (DRY), or entertainment in nature. By hosting an event prior to a large recruitment effort such fall formal recruitment you can increase your chapter’s awareness. Also, it can be a good example of how Phi Kappa Tau is much bigger than a party. Some examples are a 3-on-3 tournament to raise money for the Hole in the Wall, a speaker to address any range of topics, a hypnotist, etc. Also, your student government association will often fund these types of events if it benefits the entire campus.
  • After formal recruitment is over host a recruitment event or incorporate recruitment into an already existing chapter event at least every two weeks. Recruitment is ongoing and it never stops or it shouldn’t if you want to be successful. Simply invite guys to a brotherhood event, chapter meeting, intramural event, service project, fund raiser, etc. This will allow potential members to experience Phi Kappa Tau as opposed to being told about the experience. Engage them into the experience. Actions are louder than words!
  • Maintain a website designated for recruitment or at least a page of the chapter’s website. Potential members should be able to log on and register, fill out a contact sheet, see a recruitment calendar, view benefits of membership, etc.
  • Make sure that every brother in your chapter replaces themselves at least twice during there time as members of the resident council. If the chapter makes this a reality you can double the current size of your chapter over the course of four years.
  • Focus on the parents – If you are able to recruit Mom they will take care of the rest. Involve the parents of other active brothers in this process
