Tackling The Tough Issues
Table of Contents

As Chapter Advisor you will have to tackle tough issues. The manner in which these issues are handled will determine the success of the chapter. Again, the chapter needs to take charge of their own affairs; however, you need to be able to gauge the potential outcome and know when to step in and confront the chapter. For more resources regarding confrontation skills, accountability, and facilitation skills see the Resource section.

Sometimes we focus on symptoms, rather than core issues in our chapter. If the Fundamentals are addressed, many times the surface issues begin to take care of themselves. Think about some of the issues facing the chapter and ask yourself the following question: “How did we get here?” Then refer to the illustration and evaluate the chapter that you work with.

When dealing with tough issues remember to challenge the members to refer to our founding principles, the values contained in our Ritual, and the values contained in the creed. Challenge the brothers to understand that they are apart of something bigger then themselves and they have to put the values or the fraternity before all others at times.
